South East Real Estate
The municipality of Ajax has an interesting beginning on how it was named. Originally part of the landmass of Pickering, Ajax was used in the early part of the 19th Century for the British Navy and before and after the victory over the Germans, the HMS Ajax battleship name was implemented to the countryside and dockyard. In 1941, the Defense Industries Limited Shell Plant was built, and over the next few years, the plant became a major employer for many people and became independent by creating a railroad, school, water & sewage treatment plants and many roads. Once the war had subsided, the Defense Industries plant removed all war-related machinery and allowed the University of Toronto to use the renovated building for classrooms (Ajax Division). At the onset of 1949, the university decided to shut down this division and empty the plant. By this time, the area had built itself up to become a thriving community but it was not until the late 19th Century that the town officially became the Town of Ajax within the newly formed Durham Region. Some of the land in Pickering was allotted to Ajax when it became an official municipality.
Ajax plays host to many communities within its boundaries (Applecroft, Deer Creek, Millers Creek, Audley North, Discovery Bay, Mulberry Meadows, Audley Road, Downtown, Nottingham, Audley South, Duffins Bay, Burcher & Bayly, Duffins Crossing, Pickering Beach, Carruthers Creek, Heritage, Riverside, Lake Vista, Salem Heights, Lakeside, South Greenwood, Castle Fields, Meadow Ridge, Southwood, Clover Ridge, Memorial Village, Westney Heights, Midtown, Village). Ajax is east of the city of Toronto, sitting on the shores of Lake Ontario and bordering Pickering to the west & north. Ajax is east of Whitby and located in southern area of Ontario and within the eastern part of the Golden Horseshoe region area.
This area has exploded over the years with a higher population which in turn has created a flurry of new home builds and heavy commercial constructions. Ajax wanted to keep much of its greenspace so thus implemented single-family detached homes on their own separate lots to ensure as little disruption to nature as possible. The northwestern area of Ajax still remains more rural, but the rest of the town is flourishing with urbanism, housing investment potential, newer builds and homes currently on the market for sale. The diversity in cultures that reside within Ajax (White, Black, Asian, Arab, Latin American and Aboriginal) is a constant draw for young business professionals to invest in the area. In the north, homes along Taunton Road and Rossland Road are newer constructions and are more spacious then the originally built single-family dwellings. At Pat Bayly Square, there are even more residential homes for sale (detached and semi-detached houses) with the additional option of business space with retail and office space leasing potential. Downtown Ajax offers an even larger plethora of home buyers options including condos, retail & office space for sale and lease.
Inside of Ajax are some notable necessities like the Ajax and Pickering General Hospital and for families with children, there are several elementary schools and five high schools (two of which are Catholic high schools and the other three are public secondary schools). The Durham District School Board and Durham Catholic District School Board are available to assist with new families to the area, getting settled in, registering children for school and information on local areas of interest for families.
Transportation in and around Ajax is predominantly Highway 401 (running east/west) and can be picked up at either Salem Road or Westney Road. Durham Region Transit service is available throughout Ajax and Pickering to assist in getting people into Toronto and surrounding cities & towns.
Ajax possesses a mishmash of exciting outlets both indoors and outdoors for residents to enjoy. There are numerous trails for pedestrian and cyclists use (cycling in Ajax is highly advocated) and the Waterfront Trail & Millers Creek Trail are the best for scenic serenity in nature. There are many parks along trails in Ajax to further the enjoyment of natural surroundings that are ecologically diversified. The Waterfront is exciting in its own right, armed with over 6 km’s of park land and shoreline that touches Lake Ontario, the opportunities for recreational fun is almost unlimited. For golf enthusiasts, there are five outstanding courses around Ajax (Carruthers Creek Golf & Country Club, Annandale Golf & Curling Club, Deer Creek Golf & Banquet Facility, Riverside Golf Course and Monday’s Choice Golf Centre). For a different pace of fun, residents can stop by Ajax Downs to take in some casino action with slot machines (over 800 of them!). Festivals and events are a year-round affair, with so much culture and diversity, there is always a celebration going on in Ajax. Pickering Village is also another highlighted fun place to visit; the architecture is historically interesting & eye-appealing, the shops are quaint, and a stroll down Old Kingston Road will give one a real sense of the 1800s.
